Tackling energy and water efficiency together

Having worked with factories on process efficiency for the last seven years, we intensified our efforts as we entered Phase Two of our decarbonisation programme (2023-2025). This saw the launch of the Primark Resource Efficiency Programme (PREP), which aims to drive progress on our supply chain carbon and water targets by helping factories address energy and water efficiency.

Over the past two years, Primark has funded 97 third-party audits looking at operational efficiency within factories across tiers one, two and three of our supply chain, establishing actions and roadmaps for improvement, including factory upgrades and onsite renewable power. We have also provided training, in-person and online, to hundreds of factories, covering climate action, operational efficiency and carbon and energy target setting.

We have gained valuable insights from PREP, not only on the many opportunities that exist to optimise factory performance in our supply chain, but also on implementation challenges. For example, in one of our cohorts in Bangladesh, less than half of the recommended efficiency actions were implemented by the end of the project. This suggests that while the audit has been successful, implementation challenges remain that we must solve as we expand the programme. We are using our learnings on both the successes and challenges of PREP to evolve our approach.
